The Joys and Sorrows of Being a Grandma

There is something incredibly special about being a grandma.

It’s a love that is hard to explain until you experience it yourself. You look into the eyes of your grandchild and somehow, you see a little piece of your own child staring back at you. The smile. The expressions. The mannerisms. Maybe even the stubborn streak you recognize all too well. And suddenly, you’re looking at an entirely new generation of your family—and your heart feels bigger than you knew it could.

Grandchildren bring a unique kind of joy. You get to watch them discover the world, celebrate their little victories, listen to their stories, give the extra hugs, make the special treats, and sometimes spoil them just a little. You get to love them deeply without carrying all the responsibility their parents carry.

But being a grandma can also come with sorrow.

You watch your children become parents, and you realize just how quickly time passes. You remember holding them when they were tiny, and now you’re watching them hold their own babies. You may live farther away than you'd like. You may miss birthdays, milestones, or ordinary Tuesday afternoons. Sometimes family relationships are complicated. Sometimes circumstances keep you from being the grandma you always dreamed you would be.

And sometimes the hardest part is simply knowing that time is precious.

Grandmotherhood is a beautiful reminder that life moves in generations. We aren't meant to hold onto every season forever. We are meant to love deeply in the season we're given.

So, Grandma, don't underestimate the impact you have.

Your grandchild may not remember every gift you bought or every meal you made, but they will remember how they felt around you. Safe. Loved. Seen. Accepted. Cherished.

You are helping shape a generation, not by being perfect, but by being present.

And if you're in a season where grandmotherhood looks different than you expected, give yourself grace. There is still time to love, to mend, to reach out, to pray, to listen, and to create beautiful memories.

Your story as a grandma isn't finished. There is still so much love left to give.

A little challenge for you, Grandma:

Think of one grandchild today and reach out. Send a text. Make a phone call. Write a note. Say a prayer over them. Or, if they're close by, simply sit with them and let them know how much you love them.

Don't wait for the perfect moment. These ordinary moments are the ones that become extraordinary memories.

And remember: you don't have to be a perfect grandma to be a profoundly meaningful one. You just have to keep showing up with love.

Welcome to Strong Grandma Discussions—a place for women in every generation to encourage one another, share the joys and challenges of this beautiful season, and remind each other that we're never too old to grow, love, laugh, and make a difference.

Share this with a grandma who needs the reminder today: You matter. Your love matters. Your presence matters.
